My December tbr – getting down to business before the new year!

Hello Bookworms, can you believe it’s almost 2021! I’m guessing millions of people are relieved, as 2020 was nothing short of a disaster(do I need to elaborate…).

A little update on my Goodreads challenge is that I’ve already surpassed it! My main reading goal for December is “getting rid” of books I have no interest in reading in the new year but have been wanting to read it for a few months. I would love to clear out my shelves, making way for the anticipated reads of next year(post coming soon!) and all the other amazing novels on my tbr. This month’s tbr is ~slightly~ disorganized and just a teeny bit of a mess. So bare with me folks!

The Big Ol’ List!

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang

Summary: When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising. But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

Why it’s on my tbr: Do I really need to elaborate? After just a ~little~ peer pressure on social media and honestly feeling left out of ALL the fun, I CAVED! Now, “NO-PRESSURE”….but this book BETTER be good!

The Upside of Falling by Alex Light

The Upside of Falling: Amazon.ca: Light, Alex: Books

Summary: It’s been years since seventeen-year-old Becca Hart believed in true love. But when her former best friend teases her for not having a boyfriend, Becca impulsively pretends she’s been secretly seeing someone.

Brett Wells has it all. Being captain of the football team and one of the most popular guys in school, he should have no problem finding someone to date, but he’s always been more focused on his future than who to bring to prom. When he overhears Becca’s lie, Brett decides to step in and be her mystery guy. It’s the perfect solution: he gets people off his back for not dating and she can keep up the ruse.

Acting like the perfect couple isn’t easy though, especially when you barely know the other person. But with Becca still picking up the pieces from when her world was blown apart years ago and Brett just barely holding his together now, they begin to realize they have more in common than they ever could have imagined. When the line between real and pretend begins to blur, they are forced to answer the question: is this fake romance the realest thing in either of their lives?

Why it’s on my tbr: There is a veryyyy simple reason as to why this book is on my tbr….. it’s a cute contemporary! When I hear “fake dating trope” = SIGN ME UP!

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Summary: In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Why it’s on my tbr: After hearing high praise such as: “The Best Book of 2020”, it’s “beautifully written and filled with tragic yet important messages”, it was hard to say no. So guess what, I didn’t! I AM READY TO CRY OVER THIS BOOK!!!

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

Summary: Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City.

Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and—with a little encouragement from her friends—a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amy’s heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind.

But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream she’s ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

Why it’s on my tbr: I am HERE for literary references! There doesn’t seem to be a ~sufficient~ amount of books on the market featuring readers, librarians or book lovers! So I JUMPED at the chance to get my hands on this adorable novel!

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories: Perkins, Stephanie, Black, Holly, Carter, Ally, de la Pena, Mathew, Forman, Gayle, Han, Jenny, Levithan, David, Link, Kelly, McEntire, Myra, Rowell, Rainbow, Taylor,

Summary: If you love holiday stories, holiday movies, made-for-TV-holiday specials, holiday episodes of your favorite sitcoms and, especially, if you love holiday anthologies, you’re going to fall in love with My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by twelve bestselling young adult writers, edited by international bestselling author Stephanie Perkins. Whether you enjoy celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah, Winter Solstice or New Year’s there’s something here for everyone. So curl up by the fireplace and get cozy. You have twelve reasons this season to stay indoors and fall in love.

“Rich language and careful, efficient character development make the collection an absorbing and sophisticated read, each story surprisingly fresh despite the constraints of a shared theme. It’s that rarest of short story collections: There’s not a single lump of coal.” —Kirkus (starred review)

❄️⛸🧊🎄🤶🏻

Why it’s on my tbr: Now, the only thing better than an anthology is an anthology about CHRISTMAS! I have read reviews that mentioned the wide range of diversity, various cultures and writing styles and it all comes together over Christmas! (Not to mention there are illustrations!!)

You Had Me At Hola by Alexis Daria

You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria

Summary: Leading Ladies do not end up on tabloid covers.

After a messy public breakup, soap opera darling Jasmine Lin Rodriguez finds her face splashed across the tabloids. When she returns to her hometown of New York City to film the starring role in a bilingual romantic comedy for the number one streaming service in the country, Jasmine figures her new “Leading Lady Plan” should be easy enough to follow—until a casting shake-up pairs her with telenovela hunk Ashton Suárez.

Leading Ladies don’t need a man to be happy

After his last telenovela character was killed off, Ashton is worried his career is dead as well. Joining this new cast as a last-minute addition will give him the chance to show off his acting chops to American audiences and ping the radar of Hollywood casting agents. To make it work, he’ll need to generate smoking-hot on-screen chemistry with Jasmine. Easier said than done, especially when a disastrous first impression smothers the embers of whatever sexual heat they might have had.

Leading Ladies do not rebound with their new costars.

With their careers on the line, Jasmine and Ashton agree to rehearse in private. But rehearsal leads to kissing, and kissing leads to a behind-the-scenes romance worthy of a soap opera. While their on-screen performance improves, the media spotlight on Jasmine soon threatens to destroy her new image and expose Ashton’s most closely guarded secret.

Why it’s on my tbr: I don’t read many romance novels, but You had Me At Hola was largely loved by almost everyone I know, so it’s time for me to check it out! Not to mention that the entire cast in Latinx! I AM EXCITED!!

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas

Summary: You are in the house and the house is in the woods.
You are in the house and the house is in you . . .

Catherine House is a school of higher learning like no other. Hidden deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania, this crucible of reformist liberal arts study with its experimental curriculum, wildly selective admissions policy, and formidable endowment, has produced some of the world’s best minds: prize-winning authors, artists, inventors, Supreme Court justices, presidents. For those lucky few selected, tuition, room, and board are free. But acceptance comes with a price. Students are required to give the House three years—summers included—completely removed from the outside world. Family, friends, television, music, even their clothing must be left behind. In return, the school promises its graduates a future of sublime power and prestige, and that they can become anything or anyone they desire.

Among this year’s incoming class is Ines, who expects to trade blurry nights of parties, pills, cruel friends, and dangerous men for rigorous intellectual discipline—only to discover an environment of sanctioned revelry. The school’s enigmatic director, Viktória, encourages the students to explore, to expand their minds, to find themselves and their place within the formidable black iron gates of Catherine.

For Ines, Catherine is the closest thing to a home she’s ever had, and her serious, timid roommate, Baby, soon becomes an unlikely friend. Yet the House’s strange protocols make this refuge, with its worn velvet and weathered leather, feel increasingly like a gilded prison. And when Baby’s obsessive desire for acceptance ends in tragedy, Ines begins to suspect that the school—in all its shabby splendor, hallowed history, advanced theories, and controlled decadence—might be hiding a dangerous agenda that is connected to a secretive, tightly knit group of students selected to study its most promising and mysterious curriculum.

Why it’s on my tbr: This book has been suggested to me multiple times, and I’ve finally gotten around to it! I’m ~faintly~ worried about this solely because it is said to be confusing and a little frustrating. I am going to try going into reading this with NO expectations, and I only time will tell if I enjoy this book!

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

The Afterlife of Holly Chase: Amazon.ca: Hand, Cynthia: Books

Summary: On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.

She didn’t.

And then she died.

Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge–as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly’s afterlife has been miserable.

But this year, everything is about to change. . . .

The Afterlife of Holly Chase is a witty, poignant, and insightful novel about life, love, and seizing second (or third) chances, perfect for readers who loved Before I Fall or Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares.

Why it’s on my tbr: Another Christmas-themed book? YEP! I’m very surprised that I hadn’t heard of this, as it was published over three years ago, but better late than never(right?…)!!

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender

Felix Ever After: Amazon.ca: Callender, Kacen: Books

Summary: Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after.

When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle….

But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.

Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve.

From Stonewall and Lambda Award-winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time.

Why it’s on my tbr: A young adult novel that explores identity, race and relationship Felix Ever After was on my tbr from the moment I laid eyes on it. Not to mention the beautiful cover!!

The books in this post are the books I definitely want to read. But more than being a scheduled reader, I am a mood reader, so you can bet that there will be MANY other books being read that aren’t on this list.

Here’s another mini reading update; I have a few unread physical books and about six unread digital copies. My PLAN(not a very solid one): Is to read the books above this month(most are from the library if not all), and start 2021 off with a BANG! A bang meaning, finally reading the books I actually own.

Thanks for reading! What’s on your tbr this month?
